What certification means here
Successful completion of the course leads to certification in the practice of Chaptering within the Inner Council framework. The certification attests to two things held together. First, that you have undertaken the work fully as a participant, moving through three chapters of your own. Second, that you have demonstrated the capacity to hold the practice for another: to establish and maintain the container, to work principally through the witnessing silence the practice requires, and to accompany what the inner child brings while allowing her process to unfold according to its own intelligence.
This is a certification of demonstrated practice, grounded in lived experience, observed facilitation and successful assessment. It sits alongside qualifications a practitioner may already hold or pursue in counselling, psychotherapy, coaching, spiritual direction, somatic work or related fields. It does not replace the professional registration, clinical qualification or statutory licence required for work falling within a regulated scope of practice.
Why it is grounded in your own work
The quality of a practitioner’s relationship with their own inner child shapes their capacity to hold this work for someone else. A practitioner who has developed trust, steadiness and responsiveness within that relationship is better able to offer a coherent container, remain present when difficult material arises and recognise when their own material is entering the session.
This is why the course carries you through your own chapters while asking you to demonstrate the practice. Experiencing patient and non-directive witnessing from within gives you direct knowledge of the attention Chaptering requires and the conditions it creates. That experiential knowledge becomes part of the foundation from which you learn to offer the same quality of presence to another person.
The phenomenological stance
Chaptering is a phenomenological practice. It begins with disciplined attention to experience as it presents itself: seeing clearly, recording faithfully and allowing the phenomena to establish the limits of what can be said. Certification asks you to take up that stance, holding receptivity to what arises alongside active professional discernment. You learn to follow the inner child’s symbolic language with increasing fluency while remaining open to what each chapter, in each participant, brings into view.
A beginning
Certification marks a threshold into practice, and practitioner development continues beyond it. Ongoing engagement with your own inner child forms part of the responsibility of carrying the work. Supervision, peer reflection, continued study and development within the Inner Council framework provide the structures through which practice is examined and strengthened. A practice that has ceased to be surprised by what it encounters has ceased to attend carefully enough.
The Inner Council is a living framework. Its development depends upon the honest and attentive contribution of those practising within it. Their observations, questions and refinements, together with case material shared under appropriate consent, confidentiality and anonymisation, contribute to the evolving understanding of what Chaptering is and what its accumulated practice may reveal. To be certified is to join that company of witnesses, each committed to seeing clearly and recording faithfully what the inner child, in her many forms, continues to show.
