What the book is

Chaptering: Healing the Past Through Imaginal Storywork is the written record of the practice — the text the course is taught from, and a hard copy of which is included with it. It is a phenomenological account: the disciplined description of Chaptering as it presents itself, developed across years of practice and a substantial body of cases within the Inner Council framework. It sets out what the inner child does when she is given the conditions the practice establishes, the frameworks that illuminate the patterns she produces, the practical discipline the practitioner cultivates, and the actual record of chapters as they unfolded, session by session, in the words of the participants who lived them.

The question the book addresses is simple and primary: what happens in Chaptering practice, and what patterns can be reliably observed across cases. Its claims are specific and bounded — that the practice produces consistent and recognisable forms, that those forms carry coherent and interpretable meaning, and that the work moves lives. What it documents faithfully, it documents with the precision faithful recording requires, and what remains genuinely open, it holds open.

How it is built

The book is in five parts, moving from ground to practice to living evidence. Part I establishes the conceptual foundations: the inner child, the imaginal, the wider landscape of inner child approaches, and the phenomenological stance from which the book proceeds. Part II gathers the theory — the consciousness structures, the mythic and ancestral parallels, the archetypal logic, the chapter as a unit, and the role of the practitioner. Part III turns to the practice in full operational detail: readiness, pacing, intervention, and the particular significance of the first chapter. Part IV is the casebook, and it is the heart of the book. Part V holds the reference material — a glossary of the practice's specific terms, a note on extended initiatory sequences for the advanced practitioner, and a guide to further reading. An appendix presents a single first chapter in full.

The casebook is where the theory becomes visible. Each case is presented whole, in the order it was lived, with every chapter the participant completed and a summary that draws each chapter's movement together. The cases appear in the order they were lived; the inner child orders her own material, and the casebook honours that by presenting each one whole, in its natural sequence. Reading the cases is the most direct way the book offers to develop a practitioner's eye — encountering the inner child building her world, leading the participant through it, mediating what is difficult, offering her gifts, and bringing each chapter to its organic close.

Who it is for

The book is written for the practitioner: the reader ready to begin or deepen their Chaptering work, holding the dual orientation the practice asks for — receptivity to the material as described, and active professional discernment drawn from their own experience. It is also a complete account for anyone drawn to understand the practice in depth before undertaking it. On the course, it is the companion text: read alongside the work as the work unfolds, so that the theory gives language to what you are already living.
